Swap to Stop e-cigarette pilot at Pharmacies in Trafford 2019

Cropped Vaper

E-cigarettes are a popular and economical way to stop smoking and are 95% less harmful than cigarettes.

Trafford Council and Trafford CCG help smokers quit with e-cig health scheme.

An innovative scheme to help Trafford’s thousands of smokers quit for good has been launched.

Trafford Council and Trafford CCG are testing the use of e-cigarettes or ‘vaping’ as an innovative and safer alternative to cigarettes as part of the ‘swap to stop’ pilot. E-cigarettes are a popular and economical way to stop smoking and are 95% less harmful than cigarettes.

Residents who attend a pharmacy to enrol in the scheme will have a consultation with a smoking cessation advisor to understand more about their current smoking behaviour, and will be given a free 4-week starter e-cigarette kit. Regular support will be offered through the pharmacy, with further consultations after two and four weeks.

After 4 weeks, we hope that those taking part will be ex-smokers, benefiting from improved health, but also saving money – e-cigarette liquids are much cheaper that tobacco.

Smoking is one of the biggest contributors to preventable ill health and premature death in the UK. Around 50% of lifelong smokers will die from smoking-related diseases, so it’s vital that a range of options are available to support and guide people wishing to stop smoking through the process and improve the value of life for both themselves and their families. About 22,000 Trafford residents smoke, and more than half of smokers want to quit.

Trafford already provides smoking cessation support, including prescribed nicotine patches and gums at selected GP surgeries and pharmacies.

This trial is available to Trafford residents who smoke, are aged over 18 and are not pregnant. It is available until the end of March 2019 at the following pharmacies:

“One of the best things that anyone can do in 2019 to improve their health and wellbeing is to stop smoking” explained Cllr Judith Lloyd, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, Trafford Council.  “We are offering Trafford residents a free e-cigarette starter kit, with professional smoking cessation support to encourage people to stop smoking in 2019. If you currently smoke but would like to quit, and would like to try a free e-cigarette, please visit one the 6 pharmacies in Trafford who are offering this service before the end of June 2019.”

“While e-cigarettes contain nicotine, just like traditional nicotine patches and gums, they don’t produce the cancer-causing carcinogens that are produced by burning tobacco.”  explained Ben Fryer, Public Health Registrar, Trafford Council. “As a result, Public Health England estimates that e-cigarettes are 95% safer than tobacco. E-cigarettes are recommended as one option to help people stop smoking by Public Health England, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the medical royal colleges.“
