Unique chance for sports fans to get Covid-19 jab

Sports fans and residents are being given a unique opportunity to get the Covid-19 vaccine in Trafford this week.

A walk-in vaccine clinic – where no booking is required – is being held at Trafford Town Hall on Wednesday 28 July from noon to 7pm, which coincides with two cricket fixtures and a Manchester United pre-season friendly at Old Trafford*.

It comes after cricket fans took the chance to get their jabs at Emirates Old Trafford stadium for the new 100 ball series men and women’s games between Manchester Originals and Birmingham Phoenix on Sunday (25 July).

Dr Mark Jarvis, Medical Director at NHS Trafford CCG, explained: “The conversations we have had with younger people in our borough tells us that they want the opportunity to get a vaccine at a time that is convenient to them, such as around commitments like work and education.

“So what better way to provide this convenience than to make the jab available at sports matches? We’re always looking at different ways to make it easy for people to come forward for the vaccination, should they choose to do so.

“Tomorrow’s clinic is open to anybody aged 18 and over who wants to take the vaccine (Pfizer and AstraZeneca being used). If you have not yet had a vaccine, you can have your first dose, or second dose if your first dose was 8 weeks ago or more.

“A team of healthcare professionals are on hand to answer any questions and look forward to seeing you.”

Sunday’s clinic was a success with spectators and stadium staff invited to have the jab at a time that suited them, and tomorrow’s clinic will be available to anyone aged 18 and over, whether they have a ticket for the cricket or football or not.

Trafford’s vaccination programme has been a success to date with more than 163,000 first doses and more than 135,000 second doses having been given as of Monday 26 July.

If tomorrow’s clinic is not suitable, people are reminded that they can find their local vaccination sites – both pre-bookable and walk-in clinics – at www.england.nhs.uk/north-west/grab-a-jab.

*Wednesday’s fixtures are Manchester Originals v Northern Superchargers cricket women’s team (3pm) and men’s team (6.30pm), and Man Utd v Brentford (8pm).
